European University Cyprus
European University Cyprus is actively engaged with local, regional and global partners to promote opportunities for long-term strategic research partnerships and innovative programs of study. The vision of the European University Cyprus is to be a leading university in the region, offering excellence in teaching, research and student support, offering the appropriated education for successful and fulfilling careers, understanding and serving the needs of the society and to create knowledge through research and innovation. European University Cyprus was established as Cyprus College in 1961 and was granted university status in 2007. Over the last decade, the university has fostered a culture of modernization that has resulted in levels of growth that have exceeded all expectations, upgrading the quality of tertiary education in Cyprus and defining a clear international orientation for the university and the country. Presently, European University Cyprus has five schools:
- The School of Humanities, Social and Education Sciences
- The School of Business Administration
- The School of Sciences
- The School of Law
- The School of Medicine
In addition, European University Cyprus operates a Distance Education Unit. All Bachelor’s, Master’s and PhD Programs have been approved by the Cyprus Agency of Quality Assurance and Accreditation in Higher Education (DI.P.A.E.) and are recognized worldwide.
School of Humanities, Social & Education Sciences
The purpose of the School curricula is to provide students with the necessary skills and knowledge to prepare them for careers in the field of psychology, mass media, education, music and graphics/art. The School of Humanities, Social and Education Sciences of European University Cyprus has four Departments: The Department of Arts, the Department of Education Sciences, the Department of Humanities and the Department of Social and Behavioral Sciences. Faculty members of the School enjoy excellent reputation in their respective fields and are valuable research contributors in Cyprus and abroad. With an emphasis on critical thinking, and excellence in all forms of teaching, the academic staff of the School aim to prepare students for their future roles as working professionals, teachers, researchers and artists. That is why the School curricula aim to provide quality education, which will enable undergraduate and postgraduate students to be involved in the educational, cultural and social aspects of life in Cyprus and overseas. The faculty of the School participates heavily in research and has established various cooperation partnerships with academic institutions, associations, international agencies, covering areas such as education, graphics, arts and music.
The Department of Education Sciences is characterized by a high demand in both its undergraduate programs of Primary Education and Early Childhood Education, as well as its postgraduate programs in Special (Inclusive) Education, Educational Leadership, Early Childhood Education, and Technologies of Learning and Communication. All the programs in Education are respected for the outstanding work that is done for the compulsory modules of practical training, a necessary requirement which will determine the quality of teachers for the future generations.
The Department of Arts provides remarkable programs in Graphics and in Music, as well as postgraduate programs in Music Education, and Visual Arts Education. Students of the department have helped develop a multicultural campus at the university with the various cultural and creative events they organize on a regular basis.
The Department of Humanities is an interdisciplinary and multicultural unit. Our academic staff and instructors come from a variety of cultural backgrounds including Cyprus, Germany, the UK and the USA, and hold expertise in a wide variety of fields including Linguistics, English and American Literatures, Gender Studies, English as a Foreign Language, Media and Communication Studies. Currently offering a BA and an MA in English Language and Literature, the Department also prides itself at being involved in almost all degrees at EUC since we offer, among others, courses in English as a Foreign Language, Communication, Public Speaking and Greek Language.
The Department of Social and Behavioural Sciences is an interdisciplinary unit, part of the School of Humanities, Social and Education Science. Offering different programs of study in the fields of European Studies, Social Work, Sociology and Psychology, members of the department seek to introduce students to contemporary phenomena and events that affect modern-day society. The department prides itself on the scientific diversity of its staff members, evident from their distinct research agendas and areas of expertise. Students pursuing a degree in one of the department’s programs of study will join a vibrant and stimulating academic community that will provide them with the necessary tools for success in their professional careers.
The European University Cyprus participate in the European Media Coach Initiative through the School of Humanities and Social Sciences and through the Department of Education Sciences.
Role in the project
The European University of Cyprus is the lead partner of the project. As such it has the responsibility to bring unity to the various elements that make the project and the responsibility for the general and financial management of the project.
The European University Cyprus will, also, undertake the responsibility of successfully replicating the Dutch National MediaCoach Initiative in the Cypriot context.
The European University Cyprus, as an adopting organisation will perform:
• the preliminary assessment of the context in which the scaling up will occur
• the adaptation and the cultural tuning of the MediaCoach initiative in the Cypriot national context
• the delivery of the MediaCoach initiative to a total of one hundred (100) professionals working with youth in Cyprus
• the scaling up activities required for the widespread exploitation of the MediaCoach initiative in Cyprus
• Finally, the European University Cyprus has the responsibility to put into place the quality plan and to undertake all the actions and activities relating to quality insurance concerns of the project
